Massachusetts State Elevator Testing
“PROFESSIONALS SERVING PROFESSIONALS”
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires that the following be tested on an annual or in some cases a five year basis;
“All elevators, moving stairways, dumbwaiters, moving walks, material lifts & dumbwaiters with manual transfer devices and wheelchair
lifts.
The Stanley Elevator testing process:
Thirty days prior to the expiration of your elevator certificate, we automatically apply to the Massachusetts Department of Public
Safety for an inspection of your equipment. The testing schedule is provided by the Commonwealth. Our testing coordinator then notifies
the building owner or management of the test date. This test includes complete inspection of all elevator safety components, and if
applicable a test of your smoke detectors and emergency power operation. This will require the presence of your electrician and/or Fire
Alarm Company.
On condition that there are no test violations, the new certificate is provided and installed in the elevator that day. If however
there are violations, a blue certificate is posted, and the State allows ninety days to correct all issues. Stanley Elevator will track
and manage the abatement of all violations. A certificate will be issued when all violations are corrected.
If violations are not corrected within the ninety day period the elevator is shut down and placarded. This results in an additional
$400.00 fee payable to the state.
In the event that a serious life safety issue exists at any time, the state inspector may immediately shut the unit down for repair.
The equipment cannot be used again until all work permit fees have been paid, all repairs complete, and the unit has been re-inspected.
Should you require an after-hours fire service or generator test, the Commonwealth and Stanley Elevator Company are available. Testing
on overtime is an additional cost.
