Maine State Elevator Testing

The State of Maine requires that all elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters and lifts be inspected annually.

This test can be administered by the chief inspector, a deputy inspector, or a licensed private elevator inspector. A list of private inspection contractors is available from the state.

In Maine, the elevator licensing board mails the certificate renewal form directly to the building owner sixty days prior to expiration. The owner contacts the inspector who will schedule and perform the recertification test providing the owner with the results. The application is returned by the building owner to the State, along with a check and a copy of the elevator test report. It must be noted that this process is not included in the maintenance contract, and that the responsibility for the annual test falls entirely on the customer.

If the elevator is equipped with fire recall, an annual fire service test is also required. It is in the customer’s best interest to schedule this once the renewal application is received. The onus again lies with the customer to schedule the fire recall examination. This normally does not occur at the same time as the annual test, but should be done in advance so as to have the fire test complete for the annual recertification.

Every five years, each cable elevator is required to undergo a weight test. This process involves putting maximum capacity on the elevator and testing all functions. Stanley Elevator Company will schedule this with the customer and we will provide all reports to the State Inspector as required for recertification.

Should any code violations exist, we will work with the building owner to rectify any issues. Upon completion of repairs, we will notify the State that the violations have been completed, and the certificate will be issued.
